Extra Credit Readings
Read articles and answer questions for extra credit. Additionally, if you find an interesting article that I decide to publish on this list, you will also receive extra credit.
1. Christopher Columbus is hailed as a hero by many, not only for his bravery, but also for the way the world changed in the aftermath of his voyages (The Columbian Exchange). Others however, view him as a villain because of the disastrous results his arrival in The New World had on the native population. Read this article and list at least 3 examples of cruelty by the Spanish. Explain how these events are perhaps different from the view of Columbus you were taught in school. Lastly, was Columbus a hero or a villain? Give your opinion and cite evidence.
2. Does the Pledge of Allegiance violate seperation of church & state? Read the first five paragraphs of the the article & answer these four questions. 1) What was the ruling of the federal court? 2) When were the words "under god" added to the pledge? 3) Who has the final say on whether the pledge is constitutional? 4) What is your opinion? Why?
